Look Ma! No Hands!
DON’T FORGET! It’s been coming for a year and a half, so no excuses!
California’s “Hands Free” law goes into effect July 1, 2008. There is no grace period. You will have to use some kind of hands-free device to operate a cell phone while driving. The base fine for the FIRST offense is $20 and $50 for subsequent convictions. With the addition of penalty assessments, the fines can be more than triple the base fine amount. A law enforcement officer can stop you for this offense alone, and cite you. Vehicle Code (VC) ยง23123
For full details see the DMV’s website.
My advice? Hang up and drive!
This leaves the rest of us with no choice but to assume that every other driver is on the phone, and thus not focused on the task at hand. I’ll feel (and be) less safe than I am today.
