Census to add Gay, Transgender counts in future tallies
In the upcoming 2010 Census of the United States, the Census Bureau will be able to count same sex couples, whether married, in a civil union, or simply living together. They will not, however, be able to provide a count of people who are gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgendered. Since the official count that takes place every decade requires Congress to enact legislation delineating the contents of that count, the Census Bureau will not be able to provide complete information about our populations.
Last Thursday, Census officials told community leaders in San Francisco that future editions of the American Community Survey could include questions designed to provide data to states and local communities on populations that are not covered in the official decade count. The ACS questionnaires are a more detailed, and expansive look at demographics of various regions.
