Man attacked, raped after using social networking app.
The proliferation of social media provides a multitude of ways for people to make connections, allowing everything from random chats, friendships, hook ups, even long term relationships. Between the various web sites and smart phone apps, there’s something for everyone. As with every shiny new toy for the boys (and girls), however, there’s a dark side as well. One California man found out the hard way that there is a risk to meeting others at the new ‘watering hole’.
Christopher Alvarez, 23, was arrested December 5 by Visalia police after he assaulted a man he met through an unspecified “social network application”. (update 6:30 am – it’s now being reported that the method of contact was the smart-phone app Grindr)
Police say Alvarez went to the victim’s residence on November 30. When he was refused entrance, Alvarez forced his way in. Once inside, he pepper-sprayed, tied up, and sexually assaulted the victim. Alvarez then stole property from the residence and fled. The Violent Crimes Unit of the Visalia Police Department investigated, and made the arrest a few days later.
Police believe this suspect may have committed similar crimes, and are asking anyone with information to call them at 559-713-4234.
Grindr. Scruff. Adam4Adam. Gay.com. Manhunt. OKCupid. These and other sites and apps make meeting others as easy as sending a text message. As the old “AOL inches” adage reminds us, however, you can’t believe everything you see online, especially when it comes to meeting strangers. You never know when your hot hook up might turn into a nightmare. Be careful who you invite to your home, being safe means more than just using a condom.
