Abstinence

Markos himself writes:

I don’t think the evidence is there to claim Trig is Bristol’s son, as some have speculated, but a second rumor floating around Alaska circles turns out to have been true:

The 17-year-old daughter of Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin is pregnant, Palin said on Monday in an announcement intended to knock down rumors by liberal bloggers that Palin faked her own pregnancy to cover up for her child.

Bristol Palin, one of Alaska Gov. Palin’s five children with her husband, Todd, is about five months pregnant and is going to keep the child and marry the father, the Palins said in a statement released by the campaign of Republican presidential candidate John McCain.

Maybe one more abstinence-only supporting politicians will realize the limits of such an approach. Teens will do what they will do. It’s obvious Bristol would’ve been better served with a discussion about safe sex. Instead, she’s now facing a shotgun wedding to the baby’s father.

Palin

without comments

MoDo:

The guilty pleasure I miss most when I’m out slogging on the campaign trail is the chance to sprawl on the chaise and watch a vacuously spunky and generically sassy chick flick.

So imagine my delight, my absolute astonishment, when the hokey chick flick came out on the trail, a Cinderella story so preposterous it’s hard to believe it’s not premiering on Lifetime. Instead of going home and watching “Miss Congeniality” with Sandra Bullock, I get to stay here and watch “Miss Congeniality” with Sarah Palin.

Enthusiastic Republicans don’t see the choice of Palin as affirmative action, despite her thin résumé and gaping absence of foreign policy knowledge, because they expect Republicans to put an underqualified “babe,” as Rush Limbaugh calls her, on the ticket. They have a tradition of nominating fun, bantamweight cheerleaders from the West, like the previous Miss Congeniality types Dan Quayle and W., and then letting them learn on the job. So they crash into the globe a few times while they’re learning to drive, what’s the big deal?

Whole thing here. (Registration required.)

For the “be careful what you ask for” file…

with 2 comments

Borrowing this from Scout Finch at Daily Kos.

As Hurricane Gustav barrels toward the Gulf Coast and residents are fleeing in droves, I am reminded of this “humorous” piece put out by Dobson’s Focus on the Family organization last week:

Yes, that was Stuart Shepard of Focus on the Family encouraging people to pray for rain of biblical proportions to ruin the Democrat’s big night in Denver. How Christian of him, no?  And, how oh-so-ironic that Hurricane Gustav is now threatening to derail their own convention. While the residents of the Gulf coast are in our own hearts and prayers as they weather this storm, there does seem to be a sense of justice that New Orleans and memories of Katrina would come back to haunt this Republican convention. The memories of Katrina should rightly haunt them for the rest of their years.

Are you listening Stuart Shepard? Hurricanes qualify as “rain of biblical proportions”, don’t they? Perhaps God is trying to tell you something. You would do well to heed these signs and atone for your sins. You can start by focusing on rebuilding New Orleans and the Gulf coast.

Warning: Computer Virus

without comments

Snopes says this is real. I’ve received messages similar to the ones described from other companies besides UPS and FedEx. I recommend you not open any e-mail with a similar message.

The newest virus circulating is the UPS- and now FedEx- Delivery Failure. You will receive an email from UPS Packet Service along with a packet number.

NOTE:  The word packet is mis-spelled on this line. It will say that they were un-able to deliver a package sent to you on such and such a date. It then asks you to print out the invoice copy attached.

Don’t try to print this. I launches the virus! UPS and FedEx don’t use attachments in this manner.

Pass this warning on to all your PC operators at work and home. This virus has caused Millions of dollars in damage in the past few days.

Lesbian activist Del Martin dies at 87

with one comment

At least she got to get married.

(08-27) 13:28 PDT San Francisco, CA (AP) –

Del Martin, a pioneering lesbian rights activist who with her lifelong partner became a symbol for the movement to legalize gay marriage, died Wednesday morning. She was 87.

Martin died at a San Francisco hospital two weeks after a broken arm exacerbated her existing health problems, according to Kate Kendell, executive director of the National Center for Lesbian Rights.

Her partner of more than 55 years and wife of just over two months, Phyllis Lyon, was with her.

Rest here.

We are this stupid

without comments

Once upon a time, there was a Republican Party Presidential Primary Race. One of the candidates was called Rudolph Giuliani. Mister Giuliani was the mayor of New York City on the day Islamic radicals flew airplanes into both towers of the World Trade Center.

Last September, one of his supporters put out the idea of house parties where the goal was to raise $9.11 per donor. That drove blogger Duncan Black over the edge. (It drove me over the edge, too. Mr. Black expressed himself.)

The full list of Mr. Black’s ideas is captured here. Second on the list:

If Rudy! is elected president we can mint a special coin worth exactly $9.11. It’ll double as tokens to his fundraisers, of course.

The other four are just as good, so go read them.

Well, kids, the ridiculous always evolves into the more ridiculous. Check this. That’s right. 9+11=20. So  somebody is selling a fake $20 bill.

Please do not let these people separate you from your money. The National Enquirer crowd will give them quite enough.

Just sit back with me and enjoy the stupidity of our culture and discourse.

Thank Hallmark

with 2 comments

The bat-$hit crazy wingnuts at the American Family Association are going postal over Hallmark’s new line of same-sex marriage cards. They have put up an online form intended to bombard Hallmark with hate mail.

I saw a suggestion on another blog that everybody buy a Hallmark thank you card and send it to

Donald J. Hall, Chairman
Hallmark Cards
2501 McGee Trafficway
Kansas City, MO 64108

Possible message: “Thank you for introducing same-sex marriage cards. By doing that, you are making sure that everyone who cares enough can send the very best!”

Rick Warren’s Carnival of Confession

without comments

If you’re paying any attention, you know that “survey says” the only person less likely than an atheist to win an election in our God-Blessed secular nation is a homosexual. (That’s “hammaseckshul“, to you who are huked on fonix.)

If you’ve paid any attention to John W. McSame’s campaign (for The Chimperor’s unconstitutional third term) this week, you know that he’d have a baby killer for Vice President, but not somebody who believes that queers are human.

Pro-Choice is okay, but Pro-Gay is not. This really is the theatre of the absurd.

So, go read the message that precipitated this rant. And as much as you can, stay away from the Mainstream Entertainment Media. They don’t report. They influence.

When you’re done with the teaser (below), go read the whole thing. Estamos jodidos.

http://www.waynebesen.com/2008/08/rick-warrens-carnival-of-confession.html

The Washington pundits who brought us George W. Bush’s presidency and the Iraq fiasco have reached a consensus that John McCain came across as “more presidential” at mega church pastor Rick Warren’s faith forum. This conclusion is true if we are still defining “presidential” as a cocksure windbag who bonds with the common people by pandering to the lowest common denominator.

On cue, the media judged the candidates by how fun they’d be at a barbecue. McCain was lauded as a “commanding figure” while Obama was derided for coming across as “professorial.” In today’s politics, if you demonstrate your I.Q. your career may be through and a candidate can now admit having smoked marijuana, but not that he has experimented with arugula.

In 2000, the media gave Bush an easy ride because he was affable, but have learned nothing after his presidency turned out to be laughable. We watched Bush strut in his flight suit on an aircraft carrier with a gigantic banner claiming “Mission Accomplished.” When it was clear that the mission had hardly begun, Bush thumped his chest and challenged the insurgents to “bring it on.” Well, they obliged and now thousands of Americans and tens of thousands of Iraqis are dead.

Gay Wedding Cards: I’m tingling!

with one comment

This will have some people grumbling in their “free market” oatmeal. May I watch?

Now on the Hallmark aisle: Gay marriage cards

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Most states don’t recognize gay marriage - but now Hallmark does.

The nation’s largest greeting card company is rolling out same-sex wedding cards - featuring two tuxedos, overlapping hearts or intertwined flowers, with best wishes inside. “Two hearts. One promise,” one says.

Hallmark added the cards after California joined Massachusetts as the only U.S. states with legal gay marriage. A handful of other states have recognized same-sex civil unions.

The language inside the cards is neutral, with no mention of wedding or marriage, making them also suitable for a commitment ceremony. Hallmark says the move is a response to consumer demand, not any political pressure.

“It’s our goal to be as relevant as possible to as many people as we can,” Hallmark spokeswoman Sarah Gronberg Kolell said.
