No on Prop 8 (Spanish)

America Ferrera, Tony Plana & Ana Ortiz Speak Out Against Prop 8

New Spanish Language TV Spot Released

SACRAMENTO - Today the NO on Prop 8 campaign launched a powerful new Spanish language television ad featuring America Ferrera, Tony Plana and Ana Ortiz, three prominent actors currently starring in the hit television show “Ugly Betty.” The NO on Prop 8 spot will begin airing Monday, Oct. 27, on Spanish language television stations throughout California.

“Voting no on Prop 8 is not just about gay rights,” said America Ferrera. “It’s about preserving the integrity of equal rights in this country. This is not about being gay or straight, it’s about being American. Vote no on Prop 8.”

“Family is very important to Latinos,” said Tony Plana. “Prop 8 discriminates against families and everything we stand for. I encourage all Californians to vote NO on this divisive and unfair proposition.”

“Like all Americans, Latinos have family members and friends who are gay and deserve the same rights all of us have,” said Ana Ortiz. “Prop 8 would take away those rights and that’s why we urge all Californians to vote NO.”

“We are thrilled that these prominent actors are speaking directly to the Latino community,” said Yvette Martinez, the political director of No on 8. “Proponents have targeted the Latino community with advertisements that continue to lie about Prop 8. We’re so proud and so grateful to have America, Tony and Ana stand against discrimination and for fairness and equality.”

Nearly every major paper in California has editorialized against Prop 8 stating that “It is not acceptable to impose these beliefs to all society and, much less, amend the California Constitution. We are against Proposition 8.” (La Opinión), “it is only fair that it afford equal protection to all who choose to make loving lifelong commitments to one another. We recommend a “no” vote on Prop. 8.” (Orange County Register) and “Fundamental rights are exactly that. They should neither wait for popular acceptance, nor be revoked because it is lacking.” (Los Angeles Times).

Disapproval of lifestyle not a reason to ban gay marriage

without comments

Written By, KATHRYN HALL, M.D. • PFLAG board member • October 22, 2008

Thirty years ago I fell in love deeply and devotedly. Corinne was my firstborn, and to me she was perfect in every way, even down to the adorable casts to correct her club feet. And I fell in love again and yet again when her brother and sister were born. My greatest ambition has always been to see my children grow into happy, healthy, responsible adults, and that hope was realized this summer at the joyous celebration of my son’s wedding.

Now Corinne has fallen in love and will be married next summer during our family reunion. As her mother I have the great happiness of helping plan the wedding, assisted by the facility event planner, family members and millions of others.

California voters, you see, are actually the wedding planners with the most control. They will decide whether or not to deny my daughter, and so many other Californians, the right to marry whom they love. And as a parent, it seems strange that so many people who do not know my child can have such an effect on her life — after all, neither she nor her brother asked my permission before they became engaged. They are old enough and responsible enough to make these decisions on their own, without maternal or governmental interference. That’s why Proposition 8 is so wrong, and why a no vote is so important.

The authors of Proposition 8 are trying to make Californians subject to their particular beliefs, and rolling back the right to the pursuit of happiness that same-sex couples already enjoy.

When California began allowing same sex couples to marry, it did not lessen my love for my husband. The many family and friends who know and love Corinne also support her, and are not threatened by her relationship or sexual orientation, either.

Our religion is one of several that recognize the validity of same-sex relationships including marriage. One couple’s marriage cannot threaten another’s if they are all based on truth and love. It is a lack of truth and love that can destroy a marriage, regardless of the gender of those involved.

Proposition 8 harms marriage and families by stripping away basic rights. We must each be able to choose our own partner in marriage. There is no reason for the state to be setting restrictions on the relationships of consenting adults. The state of California does have an interest in protecting families, marriages, individual and religious freedom; but unfair discrimination protects none of us. Proposition 8 puts government where it does not belong — in our churches and synagogues, in our bedrooms and at my daughter’s wedding.

I want what’s best for my daughter, and I want her to be happy and married to the person she loves. Discrimination should never be a governmental mandate, and California should encourage matrimony based on honesty and love, and not deny it based on whom that love is for. And the institution of marriage is the only one that provides critically important benefits; domestic partnerships and civil unions do not offer the same protections for partners and their families.

And, in the end, it is about being fundamentally fair to all of our children. How can it be fair for my heterosexual son to marry, but for Corinne to be denied her opportunity for a loving, committed and responsible relationship? It cannot be, and that is why we cannot allow Proposition 8 to become law.

On Nov. 4, my daughter’s 30th birthday, we will find out if the people of California will grant her fair and equal protection under the law, or if they will take a cue from reality TV and vote her off the island simply because of whom she loves.

Stand up for our children, and again this unwarranted intrusion into our personal lives, by voting no on Proposition 8. Give my daughter, Corinne, the best birthday present she could ever want. We will all be grateful.

Apple Joins Fight Against Prop 8

    without comments

    TECH CHRONICLES

    Saturday, October 25, 2008

“Apple Inc. is donating $100,000 to fight Proposition 8, which seeks to end same-sex marriage in California by amending the Constitution to define marriage as between a man and a woman.

“Apple was among the first California companies to offer equal rights and benefits to our employees’ same-sex partners, and we strongly believe that a person’s fundamental rights - including the right to marry - should not be affected by their sexual orientation,” the company said Friday in a statement on its Web site.

Apple joins Google, which came out publicly against Prop. 8 last month. Google founders Sergey Brin and Larry Page reportedly have donated a combined $140,000 to fight the measure.

In revealing its support, Google officials voiced similar points, saying the company sees the issue as one of equality and is opposed to the elimination of fundamental rights.

“While we respect the strongly held beliefs that people have on both sides of this argument, we see this fundamentally as an issue of equality. We hope that California voters will vote no on Proposition 8 - we should not eliminate anyone’s fundamental rights, whatever their sexuality, to marry the person they love,” Brin said.

It is not common practice for either company to take a stand on political measures. It remains to be seen what effect the move might have on Proposition 8 supporters, who might avoid doing business with companies that oppose the measure.”

Fresno Bee Speaks Out Against Prop 8

    without comments

Written By The Fresno bee Editorial Group
    No on Prop. 8
Constitution shouldn’t be used to restrict rights of same-sex couples.

    10/21/2008
Proposition 8, which would define marriage in California as only between a man and a woman, raises a number of issues. But one question stands out: Should we use the state constitution to take the right to marry from a particular group of people? We believe that notion is wrong, and recommend a “no” vote on Proposition 8.We understand that many Californians, because of religious or personal convictions, oppose same-sex marriage, and these are deeply held beliefs. But there are others who believe that marriage should not be limited to heterosexual couples.

In May, the issue took a legal turn. Same-sex couples won the right to marry when the state Supreme Court overturned Proposition 22, the ballot measure that banned gay marriage in 2000.

The court said that was discrimination, and unconstitutional: “An individual’s sexual orientation — like a person’s race or gender — does not constitute a legitimate basis upon which to deny or withhold legal rights,” wrote Chief Justice Ronald M. George in the majority opinion. He got that exactly right.

Proponents of Proposition 8 have offered several arguments for their position.

They complain that “activist judges” overturned the will of the majority. But that’s what judges are supposed to do when the majority seeks to deny the rights of a minority.

The notion that same-sex marriages somehow threaten the sanctity and strength of heterosexual marriages is simply absurd. Those who worry about the health of heterosexual marriages should focus their attention on divorce, which is the real threat to marriage.

No church will be compelled to perform same-sex marriages if Proposition 8 fails.

The claim that schools will be forced by the state to teach “gay marriage,” featured in TV ads flooding the airwaves, is a flat lie. Local school districts control such curriculum, and state law permits parents to withdraw their children from lessons they find objectionable.

Proposition 8 proponents claim that same-sex partners can enjoy the same legal rights and benefits as married couples. That’s another falsehood. Domestic partners don’t share Social Security benefits, health insurance or pensions, for instance. They don’t get family leave and cannot file joint tax returns, nor do they share rights to retirement benefits.

This nation outgrew the thoroughly discredited theory of “separate but equal” decades ago, yet proponents of Proposition 8 would have us enshrine that notion in our state constitution.

All loving, committed couples should have the right to marry, with all the benefits and obligations that relationship incurs. That’s the law now in California, and it should remain the law. The state constitution shouldn’t be used to turn some people into second-class citizens. Vote “no” on Proposition 8.
